Rebecca Munce
Rebecca Munce is an artist who explores the intersection of fantasy and the everyday psyche. Her creative process begins with the intention to explore an alternative reality, a space where earthly law falls apart. Wet oil paint is drawn into, unearthing line to build a mythology. Soldier archetypes contend with their own mortality in these spaces as they interact with divine bodies. Floral borders, iron fences and stone arenas are used to contain these narratives, much like a magic circle or a playing field. In this way, her images seek to delineate yet conserve an internal lore, ever building on its own fantastical logic.
Rebecca Munce lives and works in Montreal. She holds a BFA from York University and an MFA from Concordia University. Munce has participated in numerous exhibitions in Canada, the United States, Italy and Japan. Her works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at DRAC art center in Drummondville (2022), Spring/Break (New York, 2021), Centre Clark (Montreal, 2021), McBride Contemporain (Montreal, 2020), Stewart Hall Gallery (Montreal, 2019), FOFA Gallery (Montreal, 2018) and Momozono Gallery (Tokyo, 2018). Munce's works have been acquired by Scotiabank, the Royal Bank of Canada, Collection Desjardins, and Collection Majudia. Since the beginning of 2024, Munce has been participating in the Canopy Program, a mentorship program reserved for a select number of artists and organized by NYC Crit Club in Brooklyn, NY. This program will culminate in a group exhibition presented in New York.
