Montreal-based artists David Blatherwick and Frédérique Ulman-Gagné were scheduled for a two-person exhibition to be held at the gallery this May and June. To mark the occasion and celebrate the beautiful work of these two excellent painters, these are some of the works that were to be included. They have in common a vibrant but controlled aesthetic power, and a palpably sensuous approach to building up the surface, colour, and composition of an abstract painting. These paintings don’t shy away from richly ornamental, tapestry-like appearances, fully confident in the slowly developed, self-aware seriousness of their visual expression, that gives them a clear and emotionally moving individuality as artworks.
Regretfully, we have postponed the exhibition due to the necessary safety measures we have all been maintaining. It has been rescheduled for the autumn, when we will be delighted to present the show we should all have been enjoying now. We look forward with hope and confidence to being able to reopen our doors at McBride Contemporain in the near future, and conclude the “Cavernes” exhibition’s scheduled running time, before holding our midsummer group exhibition, in mid-July.
