McBride Contemporain is delighted to announce our upcoming group show New York, New York, the third in our series of NYC-themed summer exhibitions. New York and Montreal are, in many ways, sister cities, both stemming in part from immigrant cultures on the East Coast. They share a cognate vision and set of exploratory, innovative tendencies, in particular with respect to the visual arts. They both embrace and continue to encourage eclectic and complex modern and contemporary art practices. Practices that are urban and cosmopolitan in nature and in consequence, frequently committed to original and redefining notions of what is beautiful and fascinating.

Going back to the Abstract Expressionists and Les Automatistes, these two groups worked unbeknownst to one another but in similar visual and thematic fashion, sharing radical views, and powerfully exploring new and somehow innately North American expressive possibilities. What has followed in the years since also can, in many ways, be seen to make sense in each other’s contexts. These two cities have generated art that speaks to one another - and it is in this spirit that this exhibition brings together a brilliant, seven-part cast of New York-based artists. Whether in two or three dimensions, these practices provide a jolt of New York electricity to our summer program. Montreal audiences and artists will undoubtedly find much to enjoy and connect with, in the work of our neighbors from the south.
